COMMUNITY PARTNERS:

2010-2011 Community Partner

The Mustard Seed was formed over 27 years ago to meet the spiritual, physical, emotional, and intellectual needs of mentally challenged adults. The mission of this organization is to provide a loving and protected Christian community and meaningful activities which allow the residents to fulfill the potential that God created within them.

2009-2010 Community Partner

Dr. Holt Crews recently visited the junior and senior high students of Jackson Prep and

presented information regarding Lantern Medical Clinic, an after-hours clinic serving qualified working, uninsured individuals and families. In this year of national health debate, Prep has adopted Lantern as its community partner of the year, affording students service-learning opportunities regarding the need for the clinic and how this type of clinic is established. Students in both schools will collect items to help furnish the clinic office and examination rooms. In December, students helped paint the interior of the clinic.

2008-2009 Community Parther

Salvation Army was our 2008-2009 Community Partner of the Year.
We began our partnership with Salvation Army collecting hurricane supplies and making toiletry kits for Hurricane Gustav. Then we quickly assembled and had a large drive in both schools called "Step Outside of Your World" where we collected used shoes of any kind, which were then recycled and the monies earned became Payless Gift Cards for needy school children in Jackson Public Schools. The used shoe project was so successful it became a model for other similar shoe drives in the city. The Prep students were honored at a luncheon last spring where they presented the shoe gift cards to the principals of two elementary schools in the Jackson Public School System.

The Christmas season brought time to "ring the bells" for the kettles with Salvation Army where the Prep students earned 1,452.90 which went to pay power bills and other necessities for those unable to pay bills themselves. Along with bell ringing the Prep students sponsored Angel Tree gifts in both the Junior Higha and Senior High where they filled 200 angel requests for gifts and toys.

Prep students also helped with the Steinmart promotion featuring Salvation Army where customers brought used clothes to Steinmart and they received coupons to shop.

Finally, the Junior Garage Sale donated a portion of the proceeds to Salvation Army. A devastating tornado hit last spring south of Jackson and the proceeds of the garage sale helped immediately in the aftermath of the tornado.

As a result of various efforts of good will toward the Salvation Army, and in recognition of our partnership with this agency, Jackson Prep was honored as The Community Partner of the Year for 2008-2009 at a dinner in October. Mike Huckabee was the speaker for this event, and the Prep students were invited to sit at his table!

In 2007-2008, our community partner was Mission First. Mission first is a non-profit organization started by First Baptist Church Jackson in 1997 which responds to the spiritual, physical, mental, social and educational needs and problems in the Jackson Metro area by providing Christian ministries, care and assistance to people in need. Their West Park Community Ministry Center located in west Jackson was the focus for their outreach efforts which include the following programs:

• affordable Medical/Dental Clinic and Legal aid office
• Pre-K through 5th Grade OASIS After-School Program
• Girls’ Teen Club
• Sports Ministry
• Bible Clubs and Youth Choirs
• Music, Arts and Drama Camps
• Neighborhood Enhancement Projects

The Jackson Preparatory community supported Mission First in a variety of ways.

  1. In early November, the students conducted school and arts supplies drives for the After-School OASIS program.
  2. In late November thru early December, Prep patrons purchased Christmas gifts for children and teens in all of Mission 1st’s programs. Angel Trees were set-up in the foyers of the Junior High and Senior High Buildings.
  3. On Martin Luther King Day (Jan. 21) Prep participated in a special project work day at the West Park Community Ministry Center.
  4. In early April there was a school-wide fundraiser for the Sports Ministry.
  5. In addition 20% of the Junior Class Garage Sale proceeds was donated to Mission First.
  6. Also smaller, hands-on projects were coordinated through the 9th Grade and Senior High Service Clubs.

In 2006-2007, Stewpot Community Services was Jackson Prep’s community partner. We focused all of our school-wide efforts for greater impact and support for their ministry. We began with a fund-raiser in the fall raising $ 7,500. This provided a real Christmas for their Teen club members. The teens received gifts on their personal wish/needs lists, a party here at Prep, and a new fooseball table for their Teen Center. Prep students shopped, wrapped, decorated the tree and entertained our guests! PAT volunteers helped coordinate and provide food. In the spring we conducted a school-wide canned food drive to supply the Stewpot pantry with much needed staples. In a letter from the Stewpot thanking us for our efforts, they said “For most of the teens, those were the only presents they received for Christmas” and “The blessing you have bestowed upon us have been such an encouragement.” What an impact our collective and focused efforts made! What a privilege it is to serve and make a real difference in someone’s life. Prep was so blessed by this partnership.
