In July 2008, the Eudora Welty House in conjunction with the Eudora Welty Foundation became an affiliate of the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers, whose mission is to identify, motivate, and validate the next generation of artists and writers.  The Alliance invites students in grades 7 -12 to participate in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards of 2009, the nation's longest-running, largest, most prestigious recognition program for creative teenagers in the visual and literary arts.  This was the pilot year for the writing program in Mississippi, and it was offered to students in Hinds, Madison, and Rankin counties.
