Investing In Excellence

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit. - Aristotle

Dear Members of the Prep Community,

Excellence can be defined in many ways. Aristotle believed “excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but we rather have those because we have acted rightly.” Educator Booker T. Washington described excellence as doing “a common thing in an uncommon way.” Moreover, basketball coach Pat Riley expressed that “excellence is the gradual result of always striving to do better.” I see a common thread in each of these definitions that span millennia.

It is clear that the act, the deed, the behavior, the performance, and the achievement are what differentiate the common from the excellent. At Prep, we foster a commitment to excellence in all endeavors. It is this learned commitment to excellence, defined through our actions, that prepares our students to excel. All one needs to do is measure the actions of the students and graduates of Jackson Prep over the years. Their learned commitment prepares them to exercise excellence in so many ways. As we strive to be a place where learning and character are nourished, your investment will once again validate our commitment to the ongoing preservation of Jackson Prep’s future.

During the 2000-01 school year, Jackson Preparatory School completed a comprehensive Master Plan that identified both the existing and future needs of the school. Over the last few years, Prep has addressed many of the most pressing needs, yet many still remain. Updated in the summer of 2005, Prep’s Master Plan continues to provide a clear vision of the distinction that Prep can achieve in the decades ahead.

Based on feedback from parents, alumni, parents of alumni, and others, as well as the positive findings of the recently completed feasibility study, the Board of Trustees has approved moving forward with a major fundraising effort. The five-year “Investing in Excellence” Capital Campaign will address Prep’s most urgent facility and endowment needs. In order to perpetuate Prep’s standard of excellence and provide the necessary resources for the ever-changing education landscape, our vision is ambitious, yet achievable, with the investment of the entire Prep community.

We are truly part of a very exciting time at Jackson Preparatory School. It is my hope that you will prayerfully consider the importance of our mission and the challenge that lies ahead. Each member of the Prep community is an important partner in our mission. Through your prayers, encouragement, and support, we are certain to succeed.

Sincerely,

Susan R. Lindsay
